Santee, despite its recent progress, has a history of intolerance and hate. Its nicknames include `Skinhead City`.

Two incidents in the last month raised serious questions about how and why some residents behave so negatively in a small town. Stephen Houlahan, a councilman, took to his lawn and shouted, “Hate won`t be tolerated here!” He also has spearheaded neighborhood-watch programs and given presentations to schools, youth groups, service organizations, and other organizations.

Fire Department

Santee Beach Fire Department employs 54 full-time firefighters – that`s less than one for every 1,000 residents according to a 200+ page review of the department released this week.

According to a city council report, responding times and overtime costs are too long and excessive for their needs. They are searching for solutions to improve coverage by adding more firefighters.

Recently, Lakeside and El Cajon joined forces to establish their own EMS Authority, giving residents greater local control and keeping tax dollars within their community. El Cajon has also considered a tax proposal for infrastructure upgrades.

Parks & Recreation

Santee Beach boasts several parks that provide residents and visitors alike the chance to appreciate nature. One such park is Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, featuring seven recycled-water lakes which attract over 254,000 visitors every year.

The park boasts an enchanting cypress forest that must be seen to be appreciated, in addition to offering camping, cabin rentals, fishing, boating, playgrounds, walking trails and special events for recreational activity enthusiasts.
